outline for Ladies Dzikr (Sufi Prayer) ✨

"Zhikr is a light whose origin is in the divine and whose purity draws the Sufi heart onward to the Beloved”
- Ruzbihan
🌕
The work dzikr or “zhikr” is a transliteration of the Arabic word used for “remembrance”. The following excerpt from the chapter “Zhikr” in Women of Sufism by Camille Adams Helminski explains the importance of this practice to the spiritual and mystical path of Islam which is Sufism.
✨
"Anyone who has ever experience such a rhythmic zhikr with its accelerating tempo and the shortening of the words till on a kind of intense sighing remains knows that even an outside observer can easily be carried away by the power of the experience.”
✨
The practice of zhikrs can be understood as the “heart” of Sufism": “heart”, because it is the central exercise for reaching the goal on the path, the goal of intuitively perceiving the oneness of all being, and “heart”, in the sense of Sufi terminology, as being the “organ of recognition” of God’s reality. […] It is also in this light that Sufis understand the Quran verse 29:45: “Convey unto others what of this divine writ has been revealed unto three, and be constant in prayer, for behold, prayer restrains the human being from loathsome deeds and from all that runs counter to reason; and remembrance of God is indeed the greatest good. And God knows all that you do.”
✨
These practices, also characterised in a statement by the Prophet (saw) as “keys to the gates of realisation”, go directly back to the Quran: “Remember God with unceasing remembrance” (Quran 33:41). The exhortation to approach the Creator through zhikrs, that is, “remembering” and “being mindful”, runs like a scarlet thread through the holy scriptures of Islam.
✨
The outward execution of this specifically Sufi form of invocation varies from one tariqat (Sufi order) to another but is of central importance in all of them… an ancient precept says: “at first you pretend to do the zhikr, then you do the zhikr, finally, the zhikr does you.”
✨
All women are welcome to this prayer collective once a week where we practice a traditional Sufi chanting circle based on the teachings of one of the 40 traditional Sufi Paths, the Naqshbandi Tariqat (The Golden Chain of Saints). None of the women leading this dzikr have received the cloak of a “guide” of this path; this is merely a sharing of one method of cleaning the heart - a version of which which forms the basis of all Sufi paths. The ijaza (or permission) to share this practice in a gathering online has been sought and given - but nothing more. If you feel a specific connection to the Naqshbandi Golden Chain we advise you to head to this website.
